The Moonshine is an idea on the rise. An incandescent blend of guitar, autoharp, and upright bass, it is roots music born of the endless wonder of the open countryside, the hum of tires on tarmac, and the pulsing pace of the city. Taking the magic of the stringband as their foundation and journeying through the wilds of the music that has shaped them, e Moonshine is original and dynamic, a rhythmic network of folks and songs from everywhere and nowhere. With deep roots in Folk, Bluegrass, Rock, and Blues traditions, this is music complex enough to be savored intently and rhythmic enough for dancing late into the night.
The Moonshine has crafted a style all their own by applying traditional stringband sounds to the unconventional songwriting of Michael Gerard Levasseur. e band found its footing as a group based in Portland, Oregon and on their determined hunt for fun and inspiration up and down the West Coast. In 2014, they released their rst full-length album, And Now... From San Fransisco to the San Juan Islands and as far east as Montana, they entertained at bars, festivals, weddings and parties. eir music was featured in the urban farming documentary lm Plant is Movie. In 2015 they released 2 additional singles and an album of instrumentals, all while continuing their adventures.
The year 2016 was to bring a big change to the band. After recording and releasing their second full-length album, e Cuckoo’s Crooked Path, Michael Gerard and Rachael Renee’, the core of the band, moved to Athens, Georgia. ere, they found bass player Evan Bradford and their musical stylings immediately clicked into place, allowing them to build on the sounds they had already been creating. e three piece can be booked for any gig, and may appear with ddle or banjo, while the entire 5 piece band is available on request for larger events and venues.
During a given performance, one may hear a modernist take on a folk song, contemporary original rock songs performed on traditional instruments, or their own unique versions of well-loved country, Americana or rock songs by the likes of Willie Nelson, Gillian Welch, Doc Watson, Neil Young or Camper Van Beethoven.
